Description

These two vintage Fielding's Devon Ware ceramic pitcher and jug set are in good condition and feature a charming cottage scene. They are marked as Devon Ware Fielding, Staffordshire, England on the base. The " Fielding'' signature mark on the base was used on the works produced by Devon Ware ( now known as Crown Devon) from 1917 onwards, having prior to this, have been marked with the maker's initials S.F. & Co." The 1930s marked Devon Ware's transition to the name "Crown Devon" and a vastly different art deco style.
● HOW THEY WERE PRODUCED
The cottage scene is done by transferware. The potter printed the design from an engraved copper plate onto the ceramic body before firing. This can be seen in how uniform the fine engraved lines of the cottages and thatched roofs. The colbalt blue and warm ochre tones comprising the body of the pitcher/jug were painted/sponged. This can be seen along the rim edges and handles of the jugs where the fine black/brown lines meet the deep blue glaze. A natural overlap is created on the printed picture in slight variations on each piece, done with a brush and dip-glaze technique to build up the rich blended colours. These labor intensive methods created a piece that was always never identitical to another. In our modern technological era, the shift is on prioritizing uniformity, cost efficiency and speed using robots and machines to produce mass produced identital pieces of pottery.
● A COLLECTOR'S PIECE
These are a niche highly specialized marked Devon Ware collectible embodying a cozy ''cottagecore" home style. Rare to find a pair/set of Devon Ware pottery from the 1920s, before they changed their stamp to the famous Crown Devon in the 1930s bringing about a vastly different style in their Art Deco creations.

The Smaller Jug : The HEIGHT from base to spout is 7¼ inches. The DIAMETER of the jug is 6 inches (as shown in photos)
