poweredge MD1200 storage shelf

Description

I have 4 x Dell Poweredge MD1200 NAS storage shelves for sale. These are coming from my homelab and are fully functional. Each shelf comes with 2 x controller modules, 2 x 750w psu's. With each shelf i will include 2 x 6Gb/sec cables that allow the shelves to be daisy chained. Each shelf will take 12 x 3.5 inch SATA/SAS drives. I am including 12 x hard drive caddies with each shelf.

I was using these shelves daisy chained with 48 drives of 18TB Each. There are no restrictions on the size of HDD that can be used. I will include an LSI HBA card with each shelf or if you take all 4 I will include a Dell PERC 800 in hardware RAID mode. I have IT mode cards available as well that I will include one with each shelf if they are sold separately.

I will sell all 4 shelves, cables and card for €800 ono or individual shelves with a set of cables and a card for €250 each.

For Windows users I have a Powershell script and a serial cable to reduce the fan speed and drop the fan noise down to almost silent. I was able to hold video calls sat next to the whole NAS without interruption!

Each shelf weighs in at 15-20 KG empty of drives, so they will need to be collected from Greystones. If someone buys the whole set, I may be able to deliver within a reasonable distance.

I have moved onto another solution and I don't have any spare HDD's to include, sorry!

Just being nosey. What’s your other solution? Netapp? How’s your watts per tb now compared to this setup?

@kenny.bryan moved over to unifi as a complete solution. I couldn't tell you watts per TB as it was never really a worry.

Apparently there is a 16 bay version now and certainly more aesthetically pleasing

@kenny.bryan 16bay what Dell or Unifi? Unifi have a UNVR 16 bay, but it is nearly 5k... The NAS will be not far behind for cost. Cost wise there are better options.. really depends what the use will be.

Ubiquity yeah - oh I see it now I guess you have to tinker with os to use as regular NAS

@kenny.bryan the UNAS is a file storage system, it uses a proprietary Shell placed over Linux. There are no dependencies on external OS, so things just work and the storage can then function for what I need it to do. The building and managing of the MD1200 platform provided a great learning experience. I had over 700TB of storage to manage and that now transfers to Unifi. The other benefit being my network and security infrastructure are also managed through the same interface which will simplify the solution.

Nice - yes it’s nice when things just work! The tinkering/learning around Linux servers is also enjoyable even for a home storage novice like myself ( just the netapp 4243 and old proliant ) best of luck with sale!
