  • Seaweed for Chickens

3 Better Plants Seaweed Supplement for Chickens A powerful natural supplement for your chickens. Seaweed has been studied for over 30 years for its use in poultry diets the truth is, chickens thrive on it. Animal trials show that seaweed nutrients support better gut/microbiome health and lead to more meat or eggs in broilers and layers. What it does for your chickens: Improves amino acid activity in the diet contains 60 minerals including iodine, plus 12 vitamins Increases egg production Increases feed intake and weight gain Improves nutrient balance, absorption, metabolism and digestion Reduces thin-shelled eggs (from 3% down to 1.25% in trials) Improves yolk colour The Research A US trial of 6,000 hens fed 1.25% seaweed meal saw thin-shelled eggs drop from 3% to 1.9%. When the seaweed was removed after three months, thin shells returned to 3% (SSRA Report). In a trial of 544 White Leghorn pullets on a nutrient-deficient diet, egg-laying had dropped to 2030%. Adding 8% Ascophyllum seaweed meal improved production, though results varied with the timing and quality of the seaweed harvest (Hie and Sandvik). Across 2,356 chicks, adding Ascophyllum seaweed meal to an otherwise balanced diet (without yeast, grass meal or cod liver oil) produced extra weight gain and improved health (Hie and Sandvik). In a further trial of 3,052 chicks on diets deficient in vitamins A and B, seaweed supplementation led to marked improvements in growth and feed efficiency (Hie and Sandvik).
