Patrick Hillery: The Official Biography - John Walsh - Irish Political History

Patrick Hillery: The Official Biography by John Walsh.

A substantial biography of one of the most important yet understated figures in modern Irish political history.

From his early career as a doctor in County Clare, Patrick Hillery went on to become a TD, government minister, Ireland's first European Commissioner and ultimately the country's sixth President.

Written with Hillery's full co-operation, this official biography draws on extensive interviews with the former President and access to his private papers, offering a detailed account of nearly four decades at the centre of Irish public life.

The book covers major events in modern Irish history, including education reform, the 1970 Arms Crisis, Ireland's entry into the European Communities, Hillery's years in Brussels, the 1979 Papal visit and the 1982 constitutional crisis.

At over 600 pages, with photographs and contemporary material, it is as much a history of Ireland's political transformation as it is a biography of one man.
