Stunning Vintage Mid Century Modern Ceramic Ashtray in the Most Amazing Turquoise Green and Brown Glaze, Grand River Pottery, Fergus, Canada- A Tobacciana Collector's Dream Piece!

I’m still working on downsizing my collectables, and have moved onto some random items that don’t fit neatly into any of my collections and thus are surplus to my current requirements.

For sale here is a Stunning Vintage Mid Century Modern Ceramic Ashtray in the Most Amazing Turquoise Green and Brown Glaze, Grand River Pottery, Fergus, Ontario Canada

This stunning piece of Canadian pottery caught my eye in an antiques market some years ago, but not being a smoking household, it just stands empty, looking pretty!

When I originally bought it, I thought it was by Blue Mountain Pottery, Collingwood, Ontario, Canada (1953-2004), because I couldn’t decipher the faded gold label. I have since completed more research and discovered it is actually by Grand River Pottery, Fergus, Ontario, Canada.

Both potteries operated concurrently, and from what I have read there may have been some cross-over of staff and moulds at some stage. I cannot find out the exact operating dates for Grand River Pottery, but it would be similar to Blue Mountain, but appears to be still open.

There are a lot of similarities between the two potteries, including the stunning glazes they used. But I prefer Grand River glazes, as the glaze colours are more varied within each individual piece.

This mid century ashtray is in Excellent vintage condition considering it dates to the 1950’s/1960’s. There are no chips or cracks, or age-related crazing, and apart from a tiny spot of missing glaze on the top of one of the cigarette holders, it’s perfect in every way. It still has the original gold label, although this is faded.

The ashtray stands 2.25 inches/ 5.5 cm tall and measures approx. 7 inches/ 18 cm in length.

A lovely unusual gift for the collector of Mid Century Ceramics or unusual Canadian Ceramics.
