Description:
Many people know Johan Cruyff as the greatest soccer player the Netherlands has ever known. Off the field, too, he was a true pioneer—not only in soccer, but also in education and social issues. Johan Cruyff passed away in 2016. Now, 10 years later, the Netherlands is reflecting on the rich legacy he left behind, including a documentary and an exclusive exhibition at the Moco Museum. The Royal Dutch Mint honors his legacy with a special issue in a coincard.

Johan Cruyff (1947–2016)

Johan Cruyff was born on April 25, 1947, in Amsterdam. Exactly ten years later, he joined the Ajax youth team. Seven years later, on November 15, 1964, he made his debut for Ajax 1, where he became the undisputed star. The forward was best known for his game intelligence, technique, and speed of execution. In 1971, he was named European Footballer of the Year for the first time. After his playing career, he began coaching, first at Ajax and then at FC Barcelona. He retired as a coach in 1996 and founded the Cruyff Foundation in 1997. In 2015, he was diagnosed with lung cancer, the disease from which he died on March 24, 2016. Cruyff is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest soccer players of all time.

Design

The Medal marking 10 years of the Johan Cruyff Heritage was designed by Sandra Deiana. The obverse features a young Johan Cruyff. While various graphic elements were used, Cruyff’s distinctive appearance is clearly visible. The side bears the inscription “Johan Cruyff.” The dynamic reverse side features the logo of The World of Johan Cruyff at the bottom, depicted as a ball flying toward the viewer. At the top are the words “DUTCH LEGEND,” referring to the greatest Dutch soccer player of all time.

This unique Medal is presented in a coincard, designed to further highlight the Medal design. The front features the blue color of the Netherlands’ away kit. The reverse side displays the colors of FC Barcelona, where Cruyff played and coached. On the left is an English quote from Cruyff, and around the Medal you’ll find the issue’s specifications.

It encompasses the entirety of initiatives, projects, and organizations stemming from his vision, in which his ideas about creativity, leadership, and development in sports and society take center stage.
