Silver Hammered Halfpenny 1250

Description

This coin is a Henry III Long Cross cut silver halfpenny, minted in Canterbury during the 13th century. It was intentionally cut in half during the medieval period to create smaller denominations for change, as halfpennies and farthings (quarters) were not always struck as separate coins.

Ruler: King Henry III of England (reigned 1216–1272).
Type: Long Cross coinage, which replaced the "Short Cross" design in 1247 to help prevent "clipping" (shaving silver off the edges).
Class 3b (struck roughly 1248–1250). A key feature of Class 3 is that the King does not hold a sceptre on the obverse.
Mint: Canterbury, one of the most prolific mints for this issue.
