Everyone has heard of U2 in one way or another. The world-famous band has, after all, been one of Ireland’s most beloved musical icons for 50 years! It is the first official 2-euro commemorative coin honoring a band that continues to rock and whose music and live shows have inspired generations around the world for decades.

This coin, designed in close collaboration with U2 themselves, commemorates the band’s 50th anniversary. The band is still made up of its original line-up and it continues to innovate, remaining relevant, contemporary and engaged.

The coin is available in two versions: Brilliant Uncirculated in a coincard and in Proof quality in a booklet format. Both versions are strictly limited.

2026 €2 commemorative coin to mark the 50th anniversary of Irish band U2

The coin will be dedicated to mark 50 years since the formation of Irish band U2 in 1976. The national side of the coin depicts the name of the band U2 along with an image of all four bandmembers (L-R) Adam Clayton, Bono, The Edge and Larry Mullen Jr. It also references the band’s 50th Anniversary (1976-2026), as well as the name of the issuing member state Éire. Formed in 1976 after Larry Mullen Jr. posted a sign which read ‘Drummer Seeks Musicians’ on the school noticeboard at Dublin’s Mount Temple Comprehensive,’ U2 has gone on to be acknowledged as one of the best live acts in the world, touring the globe countless times; released 15 studio albums; sold over 175m albums; and won numerous awards, including 22 Grammys and Amnesty International’s Ambassador of Conscience award.
