â– â– â– No Dreamers or Time wasters pleaseâ– â– â–

The Pioneer SX-D7000 was a top-of-the-line and flagship model in its specific series when it was released in 1980. It was designed as a modern, all-digital counterpart

Key Features and Specifications

The SX-D7000 is a highly regarded "monster receiver" known for its robust build quality and powerful, low-distortion audio output.

Power Output: 120 watts per channel into 8Ω (stereo).

Amplifier Design: Features a non-switching DC power amplifier design, which results in very low total harmonic distortion (0.005%).

Tuner: One of the first Pioneer receivers to feature a fully digital, Quartz PLL Synthesizer tuner with a "Fluoroscan" display.

Phono Preamplifier: Includes a high-gain FET phono equalizer with a selection switch for both Moving Magnet (MM) and Moving Coil (MC) cartridges.

Connectivity: Supports up to three pairs of speakers (only two can be used simultaneously), has inputs for two tape decks, and a pre-out/main-in loop for connecting an equalizer or other signal processors.

Build: A large and heavy unit (around 19.2 kg/42 lbs) with real wood side panels, characteristic of the high-end audio components of that era.

Reception and Legacy

The SX-D7000 represented Pioneer's push into a more modern, digital aesthetic for the 1980s, departing from the classic silver-face look of the 1970s receivers.

Design: Reviewers praised its clean, modern look with blue fluorescent displays and button-based controls, though the faceplate is noted as being prone to scratches.

Performance: It is considered an excellent performer, often described as a "beast" with enough power to drive demanding speakers with clarity.

Historical Significance: While it was top-of-the-line at the time of its release in 1980, Pioneer's all-out flagship in terms of sheer power during the "monster receiver" era was the earlier SX-1980. The SX-D7000 marks the end of an era, as Pioneer and other manufacturers began producing lower-cost, lower-wattage systems soon after.
