The Technics SE-A5 MK2 (often referred to as the MKII) is a prestigious high-end stereo power amplifier from Technics' "Golden Era" of Hi-Fi (released around 1983). It is a refined version of the original SE-A5, famously known for its massive, illuminated analog peak power meters and "New Class A" circuitry.
Key Specifications & Performance
Power Output: Delivers 150 watts per channel into 8 ohms (compared to the 120W of the MK1) and 200 watts into 4 ohms.
Circuitry: Features New Class A technology, which uses a "synchro-bias" circuit to eliminate switching distortion while maintaining the thermal efficiency of Class B.
Design: A "DC" (Direct Coupled) amplifier, meaning there are no capacitors in the signal path, allowing for extremely low frequency response and high signal purity.
Build: A heavy-duty unit weighing approximately 18.4 kg (40.5 lbs), featuring a large power transformer and substantial heat sinks.
Features
Visuals: Iconic large-scale power meters that dominate the front panel.
Connectivity: Equipped with gold-plated inputs and high-quality speaker terminals.
Protection: Includes comprehensive protection circuitry with indicator lamps to safeguard both the amplifier and your speakers.
Description
The SE-A5 power amplifier employs Technics New Class A circuitry, a design which eliminates the switching and crossover distortion associated with conventional class B amplifiers.
New Class A provides the low distortion of class A amplifiers, yet maintains the power efficiency of class B amplifiers.
Although the New Class A circuitry itself results in distortion figures as low as the best amplifiers in the audio industry, Technics has gone another step beyond.
