Original Signed Watercolour by TOM KERR MBE Killough Harbour with St Annes Church, County Down

Description

Artist: TOM KERR MBE
Killough Harbour with St Anne’s Church, Co. Down
Original Signed Watercolour

A beautiful and highly atmospheric original watercolour by noted Northern Irish artist Tom Kerr MBE, depicting Killough Harbour and St Anne’s Church of Ireland, County Down.

The painting is signed “KERR” lower left and is presented in its substantial period frame and mount.

THE ARTIST

Tom Kerr is a well-established Northern Irish artist, born and educated in Holywood, County Down, and particularly recognised for his delicate watercolours of the Northern Irish landscape, coastline and everyday life.

Kerr is also an author, combining his poetry and paintings in a number of published books.

In 2009 he was awarded an MBE for services to the Arts in Northern Ireland, an important recognition of his contribution to the region’s artistic life.

His work has an established secondary market through major Northern Irish auction houses. Ross’s records watercolours including Priory Winter at £550, At the Corner of the Cottage at £400, Sandcastles at £340, Swans on the Lagan at £320, and Hikers in the Mournes at £300.

THE ARTWORK

This is a particularly attractive County Down coastal subject, looking across the water towards the village of Killough, with the church spire rising above the settlement.

Kerr has given enormous emphasis to the changing weather and sky, using loose atmospheric washes across much of the composition while rendering the distant village and church with considerably finer detail.

The restrained palette and expansive sky give the painting a wonderful sense of the County Down coastline under changing Irish weather.

Identifiable local subjects are particularly appealing within Kerr’s work. Ross’s auction history includes Holywood, County Down, County Down Coast, Hikers in the Mournes, Picnic by the Lake, Hillsborough and Digging for Bait, Seapark, Holywood.

Excellent Holywood provenance

The reverse retains an original label from:

ART & HOME
147 HIGH STREET
HOLYWOOD

This is particularly relevant to the artist. Art & Home is a long-established Holywood gallery and framing business and specifically lists Tom Kerr among the artists exhibited by the gallery. The business traces its origins to McKimm Brothers in 1958, adopting the Art & Home name in 1979.

The gallery continues to operate at 145–147 High Street, Holywood today.
