The period which saw the first Great Power arms race was essentially the heyday of the battleship, but its supremacy was already being challenged by primitive aircraft carriers and the earliest really effective submarines. Despite widespread interest in the First World War, it is still still a a surprisingly little known era of naval history - but through the use of reliable modern sources and recent research, this work is able to offer a completely new and highly detailed appraisal of each navy and its warships. It is organised by country, ship type and class, with a design history and career summary, plus extensive tabular data, for each. The countries are introduced by background articles covering important political and technical developments, concluding with a complete statement of fleet strength in 1906.
