L. D. Bjorn (louis donnet, 1907–1989) – original mid-century floral relief painting, apparently dated 1959
An exceptionally striking french mid-century floral still life, distinguished by its deeply raised, almost sculptural surface and richly contrasting colours.
The composition depicts an expressive bouquet of flowers in a decorative vase, set against a warm golden-yellow background.
The artist
Louis donnet (1907–1989), better known by his artistic signature l. D. Bjorn, was a french painter celebrated for his experimental approach to texture, pigments and painting materials.
He developed a distinctive technique known as peinture sensorielle (sensory painting), adapting traditional fresco techniques to paintings on canvas and board.
His works are particularly recognisable for their tactile surfaces, expressive colour combinations and signatures incised directly into the painting material.
The artwork
This example displays particularly pronounced raised detailing throughout the flowers and vase, creating a striking three-dimensional effect.
The lower-right corner bears the characteristic recessed l. D. Bjorn signature, while the lower-left inscription appears to date the work to 1959.
The painting is presented in a substantial, traditionally styled dark wooden frame with attractive aged character.
