An atmospheric original hand-painted landscape attributed to Belgian artist Jean Parmentier (1883–1973), presented in a substantial aged wooden frame.
This expressive painting depicts a peaceful European waterside scene, featuring traditional architecture, a small moored boat, mature autumnal trees and cascading water in the foreground.
The composition displays beautifully textured brushwork, with raised applications of paint creating movement and depth throughout the river, foliage and surrounding landscape.
Its restrained palette of warm ochres, muted greens, soft greys and earthy browns gives the painting a distinctive, nostalgic atmosphere.
A charming original artwork with an interesting history of rediscovery.
About the Artist – Jean Parmentier (1883–1973)
Jean Parmentier was a Belgian painter associated with the artistic communities of Knokke and Oostkerke in West Flanders.
Born on 25 October 1883 in Ixelles, Brussels, he belonged to a family with an established artistic background.
His father, Paul Parmentier (1854–1902), was himself a recognised Belgian painter, particularly associated with marine subjects and landscapes.
Jean continued this artistic tradition, becoming known primarily for his atmospheric landscape paintings and still-life compositions.
He developed a particular affection for the Flemish countryside, especially the expansive polders, waterways and rural surroundings between Knokke and Bruges.
His work frequently explored the relationship between landscape, light and atmosphere, capturing the tranquillity and changing character of the Belgian countryside.
Parmentier was active within the Belgian artistic community and exhibited his paintings during his lifetime.
Documented exhibitions include an early successful exhibition in 1905, an exhibition in Brussels in 1938 and another in Knokke in 1942.
He spent much of his later life in Oostkerke, where his studio overlooked the surrounding Flemish landscape.
Jean Parmentier died on 3 April 1973, aged 89.
His paintings remain represented in private collections and the cultural heritage of the Knokke-Heist region, while examples of his work continue to appear through European art dealers and auction houses.

An Interesting History of Rediscovery
This painting has an unusual recent history.
Before entering my possession, the artwork was recovered from an abandoned residential property, where it had been stored in damp conditions for an unknown period.
Despite these circumstances, the painting has survived with its composition and visible painted details intact.
Following its recovery, it was transferred to a drier environment, where the wooden frame has gradually become noticeably firmer and its initially strong musty odour has significantly diminished.
The painted canvas has shown no noticeable change during this period, with no obvious warping observed.
Rather than undertaking cosmetic restoration, I have chosen to preserve the painting and its aged wooden frame in their existing condition.
The original signature, handwritten reverse identification and evidence of the artwork's age remain visible.
Its earlier ownership and full provenance are unknown.
