Large Vintage Mid Century 3D Copper Relief Wall Art Panel - J. Craig - Hobo Traveler Caricature

DON’T FORGET TO LOOK AT MY OTHER ADS!

A fantastic, medium-size vintage mid-century 3D copper relief wall art panel.

This piece features a beautifully detailed, whimsical character study of a bohemian traveler or happy hobo wanderer. Rather than a generic circus clown, the design is packed with clever storytelling details and classic post war British satirical humour.

Key Visual Features:

Natural elements: The character features wild straw or wheat hair with flower blossoms growing directly from it.

Satirical Edge: He is holding a copy of The Times newspaper tucked neatly under his arm. This is a classic mid-century visual joke contrasting a penniless vagabond with the elite establishment newspaper.

Accessories: Tucked into his coat pocket is a green bottle of wine or ale, balanced by a travel bindle marked with a crescent moon over his shoulder.

Craftsmanship and Details:

Medium: Hand-tooled copper sheet wrapped over a solid wood backing frame.

Finishing: Features beautiful contrasting chemical patination alongside vibrant, high gloss spot painted translucent lacquers, such as crisp white on the collar and shoes, and vibrant red on the bowtie.

Artist Signature: Hand-engraved in the bottom corner reads: HAND CRAFTED BY J. CRAIG (could also be interpreted as J. Cuny). This is a definitive example of the iconic 1970s British commercial studio craft movement, similar to the famous Etchmaster and Copperama panels of the era.

Dimensions:

Height: approximately 55 cm
Width: approximately 27 cm

This is a nice medium-size statement piece compared to the much smaller souvenir plaques usually found from this era.

Condition:

Excellent vintage condition. The copper has a wonderful rich sheen, and the enamel paint highlights remain bright and largely intact.

It is free from deep green oxidation or structural damage.

Collection preferred, but safe tracked postage can be arranged at the buyer's expense.
