I very quickly realised the benefits of using low energy lighting and as I am an electrical technician, I have tested quite a number of different LED lights throughout the boat. As I write this now in 2012, none of the lights that I tested prior to these products are still working. I had given up hope of finding a product that would give out a good light and would last time. However, in 2010 I met a German liveaboard who sold LEDs that a friend was using for over a year and he was very happy with them. With some reservation I purchased ten LEDs to use and test. I was immediately pleased with the efficacy and soft colouring of the lights, however I was still sceptical of the durability of them. After six months I decided that they were worth installing throughout the boat and enquired where Frank had gone to, he had left the Canaries and no one knew where he had gone to. I regretted my scepticism that I had not replaced all the bulbs while they were available, at last I had found an excellent light but had lost my source! I was reluctant to go hunting on the internet for a similar product, as previous experiences had led to a number of disappointments as items were not as described , and sometimes never even delivered. We continued with our cruising plans for that summer and went to the Azores. Having cruised a few of the beautiful islands, as we entered the marina in Horta I spotted Franks boat. I quickly contacted him and bought more lights from him. As we are both techies we discussed the merits and demerits of LED lighting. I enquired as to his source but he would not reveal that to me, which I fully understood. Sometime later I received an email from Frank saying that he had decided to stop cruising for a few years (until his children grew up) and was getting a shore bound job in Austria and would I be interested in buying his stock and he would reveal his source to me. I jumped at the opportunity as this was a product that has been proven, tried and tested by myself and many others. I buy in bulk, direct from a modern, state of the art factory.
