The marriage of Grace Gifford and Joseph Plunkett took place on May 3, 1916, in the chapel of Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin. The poignant ceremony occurred just hours before Plunkett was executed by a firing squad for his role as a leader in the Easter Rising.

The Original Plan: The couple were initially scheduled to be married on Easter Sunday, but the ceremony was postponed due to Plunkett's involvement in the 1916 rebellion.
The Ceremony: Upon his sentencing, Plunkett requested to marry his fiancée before his death. With the British authorities granting permission, the short candlelit ceremony took place at 11:00 PM.
The Ring: Grace Gifford had to quickly purchase a wedding ring from a jeweler on Grafton Street in Dublin on the day of the marriage.
The Aftermath: Following the ceremony, the newlyweds were granted just 10 minutes together in his cell under the watch of a British soldier before being separated. Plunkett was executed the next morning, May 4, 1916.
