For sale is a "silver" NBTS (National Blood Transfusion Service) badge awarded to a blood donor's upon their 25th donation. There was an award system of badges and certificates for blood donations;
10th donation - a bronze badge
25th donation - a silver badge
50th donation and beyond - a gold badge.
For around the first 30 years of the NBTS, blood donor badges were made of bronze, sterling silver and 9ct gold. Thereafter, to keep costs down the badges were all made of a base metal or some metallic alloy. The NBTS donor symbol of two entwined hearts symbol have been displayed on their badges since 1948.
Drawing upon the experience and expertise built up during the Second World War (1939-1945), the Ministry of Health launched the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) on the 26th September 1946. The newly established NBTS also took control of blood-banks and set up a national network of regional blood donation centres across the UK as well as bringing all blood donation services under the one authority. The NBTS was fully integrated into the National Health Service (NHS) when it was established in 1948.
In the early 2000s, the NBTS underwent a reorganisation to become the NHS Blood and Transplant service in 2005.
