The National Savings Movement in Britain operated between 1916 and 1978. They offered savings schemes and incentives that encouraged people to open accounts and save into funds used to finance the deficits of government spending over tax revenues. National Savings campaigns were especially important during both WW1 and WW2 in raising funds to support the war effort.
During peacetime, National Savings schemes were mainly used by the public for saving small amounts and who generally used saving stamps that would have been stuck into a booklet. When so much worth of stamps were saved (eg 15 shillings worth), they'd be exchanged for a Savings Certificate or War Bond. Interest returns were low on accounts but people's savings were secure, backed by government guarantee. The importance of the National Savings Movement on the Home Front went deeper than just savings and finance, it was also a force in society to enhance public morale as well as encouraging people to be patriotic and 'do their bit' for the country during the war.
This economy plastic badge was issued as a promotional by the National Savings Movements during the Second World War to people on opening a new savings account.
