My Covid Clear Out continues .........
........ and now I'm moving on to my Blue and White Transferware collection and my Willow Pattern collection.
For sale here, is a lovely very old (and showing it's age!) Antique Platter, by an unknown maker. It is just stamped with "Temple" on the reverse which is the pattern name, I imagine.
This was sold to me as an antique platter, circa 1870. Style-wise it is in the early Aesthetic Movement style, before the decoration became more asymmetric.
The Aesthetic Movement begin in 1868, so the date seems to be accurate, but unfortunately cannot be verified without the backstamp reference points. However, everything about this platter is suggestive a great age. It is very heavy, and well crazed, as it should be. The pattern is definitely in the early Aesthetic Movement style, and is not a pristine later transfer copy.
The pattern is called "Temple" and features a repeat pattern only around the edge of the platter, with the centre clear. The pattern features floral, and vine elements with six circular floral cartouches spaced around the platter.
The platter is in live in condition but then it does have great age!! It was very obviously used and not just a display piece. It has a lot or surface age-related crazing and a large repair to the right hand side. Please see the photographs.
All this ads to it's charm in my mind, but obviouslyit is for display only!!!
It measures 14 inches/36 cm by 10.75 inches/ 27cm, and is quite a deep shape compared to some platters.
I will have another few blue and white platters coming up shortly as I definitely need to downsize my collection!!
Perfect displayed on a kitchen dresser, which is where this one has been! Would also be amazing as part of a wall display of platters and plates. Great to have a piece with great age.
Check out my other ads and more coming soon!
