Fabulous Rare Pair of Vintage Arklow Pottery "The Abbey Supper Set" Spotty Tennis Set Plates Made for the Irish Trading Company

I am continuing my effort to downsize as unfortunately we will have to move all our belongings into temporary storage due to builders carrying out major remediation works to our brand new home.

I’m downsizing my Arklow Pottery collection next, and only plan on keeping a couple of patterns. I have a number of odds and ends and single plates that are now surplus to requirements.

For sale here is a Fabulous Rare Pair of Vintage Arklow Pottery “The Abbey Supper Set” Spotty Tennis Set Plates Made for the Irish Trading Company

These appear to be very rare and unusual, in fact I cannot find any reference to them online at all.

It’s a pity, but I have never had the matching cups, so I’m not even sure if these were also spotty or perhaps a plain turquoise and yellow. They could be matched very nicely with plain Arklow or Carrigaline Utilityware cups, but I have just had them on display as plates in one of my cabinets up until the house move.

They are in the style of tennis sets produced by a number of English manufacturers, with an oversized saucer/oblong plate to hold some cucumber or cress sandwiches! These are called Supper Sets, so a similar purpose for maybe more mundane Irish “hang sandwiches”!!

They are both in excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks or pattern loss and there is very little wear/rubbing to the rim of gilt at the edge.

Check the photos for the respective unusual backstamp which fills the depression for the cup underneath and says: Made in Arklow, Republic of Ireland, The Abbey Supper Set, For Irish Trading Co.

The Supper Plates measure 8.25 inches/ 21cm in length by 6.5 inches/ 16.5cm at the widest point.

Selling and priced as a pair. I can separate them but that would work out more expensive.

I expect these to be snapped up by someone looking for something unusual to add to their Arklow Pottery Collection.
