For sale is a finely-made vintage character jug by Royal Doulton and having the letter A by its backstamp which dates it as an early issue from 1939 to 1955. This miniature jug (D6045) features Sairey Gamp, an incompetent and often drunken nurse from the Dickens' novel 'Martin Chuzzlewit'. Mrs. Gamp, as she was also known in the novel, was described as "dissolute, sloppy and generally drunk. She became a notorious stereotype of untrained and incompetent nurses of the early Victorian era before the reforms of campaigners like Florence Nightingale".

All Royal Doulton jugs are hand-made at every stage of the process from moulding to hand-painting and firing, each one going through three different firing stages in the kiln. This jug featuring Sairey Gamp was designed and modelled in 1939 by Arthur (Leslie) Harradine (1887-1965) and Harry Fenton.

Royal Doulton at Burslem in Stoke-on-Trent were prolific producers of high-quality slip-cast character jugs that proved very popular in their day and are avidily collected today. Many other English pottery companies also produced character jugs and many of these were based on characters from the novels of Charles Dickens (1812-1870). Royal Doulton produced their first character jugs from the 1930's and are still being produced today.
