For sale are two vintage character jugs made by Avon Art Pottery of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire. These are hand-made, hand-painted and depicts characters from Chrales Dicken's novels: Mr. Pickwick (The Pickwick Papers) and Uriah Heep (David Copperfield). Both jugs are fully marked on their undersides along with the maker's backstamp.

DESCRIPTION:
Size: about 4 1/2" height (117mm).
Size (Uriah Heep): about 5" height (128mm).
Finish: hand-painted in various colours & a clear vitreous glaze.
Material(s): slip-cast white earthenware.
Imprint: AVON WARE MADE IN ENGLAND backprint and the jugs' title impressed into the base. See photos.
Weight (excluding transit packaging): Mr. Pickwick about 200g
Weight (excluding transit packaging): Uriah Heep about 275g
Approximate age: 1947 to 1968, likely these pieces dates to the 1950's.

CONDITION:
Both in good clean condition. Uriah Heep has a hairline crack extending down about 3cm from the lip edge on his left side. Mr. Pickwick has a nick in the glaze on his right side along the base. Both show glaze crazing typical of Avon Ware pieces of this age. Prices reflect this.
