For sale is a finely-made character jug (D6463) by Royal Doulton in the image of Rip Van Winkle as designed by Geoff Blower and modelled by Max Henk in 1954. This is the "small" sized jug measuring 4" (102mm) in height.

Rip Van Winkle is the main character from a short-story of the same title written by American author Washington Irving (1783-1859) in 1819. It looks like this character jug bears a resemblence to Gandalf the Grey from the Lord of the Rings triology?

All Royal Doulton jugs are hand-made at every stage of the process from moulding to hand-painting and firing, each one going through three different firing stages in the kiln.

Royal Doulton at Burslem in Stoke-on-Trent were prolific producers of high-quality slip-cast character jugs that proved very popular in their day and are avidily collected today. Royal Doulton produced their first character jugs from the 1930's and are still being produced today.
