* The Simca 8 was a rebadged Fiat 508C Nuova Balilla produced at Fiat's Simca plant in France. It was made between 1937 and 1951 and was available as a saloon, coupé or cabriolet. This Italian born engineer Amedee Gordini had become a French national. He was nicknamed “The Sorcerer”. He served as a mechanic, driver, preparer and racing car manufacturer with Fiat and Simca before founding his own brand of Gordini.
This special version of the Simca 8 was entered in the 1939 Le Mans 24 Hour race and was driven by Gordini and Jose Scaron (B/F). They completed 214 laps to be classified 10th overall, winning their class. More importantly, they won the prestigious “Index of Performance”. The car was powered by a Fiat derived 4 cylinder in line OHV engine of 1,089cc tuned by Gordini to give 60 bhp at4,800 rpm.
