Shoot the Women First - Eileen MacDonald - 1991 Hardback - IRA & Political History

Shoot the Women First by Eileen MacDonald, an unusual and compelling work of investigative journalism examining women involved in armed political movements around the world.

Journalist Eileen MacDonald set out to investigate why European counter-terrorism units were reportedly instructed to "shoot the women first".

Through face-to-face interviews, she explores the experiences and motivations of women associated with organisations and conflicts including the IRA and Irish republican movement, ETA, the Red Brigades, the Red Army Faction, Palestinian militant movements and North Korean agent Kim Hyon-hui.

The book examines how these women became involved in political violence, their attitudes towards their actions and the complicated relationships between ideology, family, feminism, loyalty and remorse.

Of particular Irish interest is the substantial coverage of women in the Irish republican movement during the Troubles, based on interviews conducted at the time.

A fascinating historical account for readers interested in the Troubles, Irish republican history, political extremism, investigative journalism and women's roles in modern conflicts.

Original 1991 Fourth Estate hardback edition with dust jacket, rather than the later paperback.

Good vintage condition overall. The book itself is very well kept, while the dust jacket shows considerable age and storage wear, particularly creasing and wrinkling across the lower rear, together with edge and corner wear. Please see photographs for the exact condition.
