SOUTHERN RAILWAY MAUNSELL 541 (SR 0-6-0 Q Class) - steam locomotive enamel badge (1970's / 1980's)

.
For sale is a merchandise badge depicting the Southern Railway 0-6-0 MAUNSELL Q-Class steam locomotive. The Maunsell Q-Class was built in 1938 and soon superseded by the more powerful and more reliable Q-Class. These locomotives were workhorses for the medium distance freight traffic through the rail network and performed well, remaining in service until their withdrawal in 1965.

Only a total of twenty Q/Q1 Class were built and by chance only one had survived, being rescued for preservation from Barry's scrapyard in Wales.

This badge shows the Maunsell in its standard black livery and later bore the British Railways number 30541. Number 541 is the sole survivor of this class and was named after its designer, Richard Maunsell (1868-1944).
