For sale is a MAID MARIAN toby made by Shaw & Copestake Ltd (Sylvac) of Stoke-on-Trent. This toby was designed by George Matthews who joined Shaw & Copestake in 1966 and continued to work for them designing many series of their character and toby jugs until the company went into voluntary liquidation in 1982.

Shaw & Copesteak Ltd was established in 1873 by William Shaw and William Copesteak and manufactured a wide range of pottery at their Sylvan Works in Longton. Their tradename SylvaC was derived from a combination of the works place, S for Shaw and C for Copesteak. Due to increasing financia difficulties, teh company's fortunes declined and went into voluntary liquidation in May of 1982.

Finish: hand-painted in various colours.
