For sale are two vintage enamelled badges originally issued to volunteers of the Royal Naval Auxiliary Mine Watching Service (RNMWS) and the Royal Naval Auxiliary Service (RNXS). The same design of badge was carried over from the RNMWS (1952-1963) over to the RNXS (1963-1994), save a change in the organisation's title. Both badges were finished in a gilt plating and the wave/explosion details picked out with a tin plating. Both these badges have the buttonhole lapel fitting indicating these were issued to male volunteers, whereas female volunteer badges would have had a brooch-style pin fitting. Although not part of the uniform, these badges were intended to be worn when in civilian clothes.
The RNMWS was established in 1952 and in 1963 amalgamated with the Admiralty Ferry Crews Association to form the Royal Naval Auxiliary Service (RNXS). Both organisations were established in response to Cold War developments and were a uniformed, unarmed, civilian volunteer service. Their intended wartime role was to man observation points overlooking ports and strategic waterways in order to report mines dropped by aircraft. Both the RNMWS and RNXS were designed as an integral part of British mine countermeasures. Volunteers were civilians (either male & female) over the age of 26, they were trained and uniformed by the Royal Navy. Uniforms were provided free, expenses paid and an allowance also paid for each exercise or instructional period. As a result of Defence cuts, the RNXS was formally disbanded on the 31st March 1994.
Members of the RNXS were referred to as "auxiliarymen" (this title equally applied to men and women), were uniformed and trained part-time. Training covered such areas as ‘afloat’ (ship manning), communications, map plotting and mine watching. Peacetime duties were civil defence in nature, such as assistance in national emergencies. As auxiliaries, they were non-commissioned civilians and not subject to the Naval Discipline Act.
