For sale is an early issue of membership badge for the FFESTINIOG RAILWAY SOCIETY (FRS). The FRS were formed in 1951 to promote and support the Ffestiniog Railway through the work of volunteers and subscribing members. In 1955 the FRS became a Limited Company and a registered charity in 1997 (No. 1064178). This badge shows the crest of the Ffestiniog Railway Society.
The FFESTINIOG RAILWAY is a narrow-gauge railway line within the Snowdonia National Park and runs for about 13.5 miles (21.7 km) from the slate mining town of Blaenau-Ffestiniog to Portmadog harbour. The line opened in 1836 and was commercially active until it was closed in 1946. Restoration began in 1954 and the first section of the line running from Portmadog harbour was opened in 1955. The first public passenger service ran from Portmadog to Boston Lodge on the 23rd July 1955. Many more years of restoration and maintenance followed until the complete line was reopened and fully operational through to Blaenau-Ffestiniog in 1982. Incidentally, the FRS also own the Welsh Highland Railway,
The railway line maintains a large range of locomotives, both steam and diesel, of which many are still operational. There is also a large range of coaches and vans rolling stock in use for public transport of those visiting the line. The oldest locomotive running on the line is Prince, which was built by George England & Company in 1864.
