For sale are two vintage CORGI MODEL CLUB membership badges, an older one of brass with enamel dating to around the mid-1960s and a later one of plastic dating to the 1970s.
Corgi Toys were a well-known maker of diecast toy vehicles for both the children's toy market as well as for collectors and special edition. The company started to make their Corgi brand of diecast models vehicles from 1956 and the brand continues today but since 1983 have no longer been made in Swansea, Wales but overseas instead. Since then, the Corgi brand had changed hands several times and are currently owned by Hornby Hobbies Ltd. These badges show the iconic Corgi dog image used by the company since 1956, inspired by the Queen's favourite pet dogs.
The Corgi Model Club was launched in December 1956 just five months after the first Corgi branded diecast cars went on sale. Corgi Toys were the first to innovate with added windows to their models, something their rivals had not done before. Over the years, other additional features and moving parts were added for extra play-value to keep ahead of the competition and add to their popular appeal. The Corgi Model Club that issued these badges had no connection with the Corgi Collector Club launched in 1984, other than using the same Corgi dog brand image.
Unlike today, the old Corgi Model Club was a children's club and marketed as such. Members could subscribe anually and get a certificate, the membership badge and avail of special offers and cataloge of vehicles for sale.
