CIVIL NURSING RESERVE (Civil Defence - Home Front) - a WW2 nurse's uniform badge (1940s)

For sale is a WW2 Civil Defence/Home Front nurse's uniform badge of the CIVIL NURSING RESERVE (CNR). This badge was issued by the Ministry of Health to volunteer nurses of the CNR and was worn as part of the uniform, pinned to the left side of the pinafore or on the hat band. Early issues of this badge were made in sterling silver but were of a base metal for the remainder of the war.

The CNR was established in January 1939 to provide extra nursing staff in the Emergency Medical Services Hospitals. As a civil defence organisation, it was staffed mainly by volunteers of whom most worked as auxiliary and assistant nurses. Recruitment into the CNR was at three levels – State Registered Nurse, Assistant Nurse and Auxiliary Nurse, who all came under the control of the Ministry of Health. The number of volunteers in the CNR remained consistent at around 25,000 for the duration of the war.

CONDITION:
Good condition. There is a blue enamel defect in the lower-left section of the badge. Pin in working order.
