GUILD OF SERVANTS OF THE SANCTUARY (Anglican Church) - an antique alter server's medal (c.1890s to c.1920s)

For sale is an antique medal originally worn by an alter server member of the Guild of Servants of the Sanctuary. The medal would originally have been worn around the neck with a purple coloured cord.

The obverse side shows the Guild's crest, a Holy Eucharist in a chalice, crucifix and two alter candlesticks with lighted candles. The text reads GUILD OF SERVANTS OF THE SANCTUARY.

The reverse side depicts the legend of the pelican shedding her own blood to keep her young alive and this imagary is symbolic for Christ dying on the cross. The analogy is, just as the mythical pelican sacrificed her own blood to feed and keep alive her young, Christ likewise shed His Blood on the Cross for humanity's salvation, which continues to nourish believers through the Eucharist. The text reads INTROIBO AD ALTARE DEI, which translates as "I will go unto the altar of God" from Pslam 43 (4).

CONDITION:
Good condition. No damage. A few edge nicks as commonly seen with soft copper antique medals. Some minor scratch marks above pelican. Some overall wear commensurate with age and use.
