For sale are two scarce and vintage CBSI JAMBORORA 1977 mugs showing the event’s bee and beehive emblem and on the other side the CBSI badge, a cross with rounded ends and a shamrock superimposed over the centre. These mugs were made by Celtic Ceramics Ltd, also known as the Kilrush Pottery company who were based in Kilrush, County Clare from 1961 until 1983. They are one of the lesser-known mass-producers of ceramics in Ireland who produced a wide range of art pottery, giftware and tableware in both contemporary and traditional designs. Established at Kilrush in 1961 with the backing of a group of German businessmen, they retained close links with the West German parent company U-Keramik (Ubelacker Keramik) art pottery, sharing similar mounds and designs during the early years of production at Kilrush but in later years tableware became the major part of their production at Kilrush using their own moulds and designs. In 1960 about 100 young Irishmen came to Ubelacker and were trained in the U-Keramik factory as preparation for their later job in Kilrush. In 1976 the pottery company was taken over by Rosenthal and closed in 1983.

The CBSI JAMBORORA 1977 was an international jamboree or gathering of scouts that commemorated the golden jubilee (50th anniversary) of the foundation of the Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland (CBSI). The event took place from the 26th July to the 6th August 1977 in the grounds of Mount Melleray Abbey in County Waterford, hosted by Abbot Edward Ducey. The theme of the 1977 Jamborora was “Ancient Ireland” with it heroic myths and legends, the different camps there being named after the seven ancient Irish kingdoms of Aileach, Caiseal, Cruachan, Dal Riada, Deise, Eamhain Macha, and Tara. Concerts were held by the Chieftains and Horslips, both playing their brand of music that blended traditional Irish music with modern pop and rock. The Jamborora was officially opened by President Hilliary, who arrived there by helicopter to great fanfare.

Over the two weeks, the event was attended by some 15,000 scouts along with around 600 fulltime volunteers who helped organise and run the event. Sleeping quarters and catering were arranged for the working volunteers but in good old scouting tradition, those scouts attending made their own arrangements for sleeping, cooking and eating, sanitation, etc. There were competitions between the different international scout groups as well as much camaraderie throughout. To facilitate currency exchange for overseas groups, both the Allied Irish Banks and The Bank of Ireland each had their own mobile banks in attendance and on a light-hearted note, the Jamborora even issued its own “Illegal Tender Note” called the Punt-Jambor of nominal value IR£1.
