IXO LM1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Red 1932 Le Mans #8 1st Sommer & Chinetti
** Le Mans 24 Hours Winner **

* At Le Mans in 1932, Alfa Romeo were the strongest brand with 7 entries, a combination of both works and privateer cars. One of the private entries came from Raymond Sommer, a rising star of French motor racing. Sommer had bought a short-wheelbase Mille Miglia corto 8C (MM-LM) fitted with a 4-seat touring body. The rear seats were small. The car had an oversize fuel tank, streamlined wheel fairings and an externally mounted exhaust to reduce engine temperatures. All the other Alfa Romeo entries were the longo chassis LM cars with Touring bodies. Sommer's shorter car had better handling and was 100kg lighter. Sommer drove car number 8 with Luigi Chinetti, an Italian running the Alfa Romeo agency in Paris. Completing 181 laps of the newly revised shortened circuit, Sommer and Chinetti won the race by 2 laps. Sommer drove for over 20 hours including on Sunday when the exhaust pipe had broken allowing fumes to enter the cockpit. They were followed home by the works Alfa Romeo 8C of Cortese and Guidotti. The 8C was powered by Alfa Romeo's 8 cylinder in line alloy DOHC engine of 2,336cc with Roots supercharger giving 160 bhp.
