For sale is a vintage lapel badge issued to a volunteer member of the ROYAL OBSERVER CORPS that could have been worn either on the beret or the uniform lapel. The badge displays the ROC emblem of a 16th century Elizabethan Firelighter holding aloft a flaming torch and with a queen's crown on the top. Their motto FORE WARNED IS FORE ARMED is displayed along with the organisation's name. This badge's design is the same as that used during WW2 except the wartime badge would have had a king's crown instead.

The origins of the Observer Corps go back to 1925 and was a volunteer civil defence organisation intended for the visual detection, identification, tracking and reporting of aircraft over Britain. In recognition of their role during the Battle of Britain, the Observer Corps received the Royal Warrant and in 1941 were renamed as the Royal Observer Corps (ROC). After WW2 ended in 1945, the ROC were stood down but reactivated with the developing Cold War. With the development of more sophisicated radar, the roles of the ROC changed and in the event of nuclear war would have been involved with the reporting of nuclear explosions as well as the monitoring of radiation. The ROC were stood-down in 1991 and disbanded in 1996.
