For sale are three competition medals awarded to competitors of the SUNSHINE DANCING COMPETITION semi-finals of 1936 and for opera in the semi-final of 1937. The Sunshine Dance Competitions were for young children and very popular during the inter-war years, their purpose to raise funds for the Sunshine Homes for Blind Babies. I presume the image on the medals is that of a blind boy looking upwards and I’ve also seen medals with an image of a girl’s head looking upwards too. The reverse sides are engraved with the competition event.
1) SUNSHINE DANCING COMP. SEMI-FINAL 1936 CHARACTER
2) SUNSHINE DANCING COMP. SEMI-FINAL NATIONAL
3) OPERATIC SEMI-FINAL 1937
Sunshine Homes were institutional homes for blind babies and children up to the age of 9 and the first was opened in 1918 by the National Institute for the Blind at Chorley Wood in Hertfordeshire. The opening of more Sunshine Homes followed during the 1920s and as blind babies were an emotive subject that elicited charitable support, they had great success in raising funds. Royal patronage was also important and from the outset Queen Mary (consort to King George V) was involved in supporting the homes and King George's sister, Princess Beatrice, was their President. The national annual Sunshine Dancing Competitions for young children were popular and medals such as the type above were awarded. I am aware of these type of medals being awarded from the 1930s through to the 1950s.
